Internships with Schnitzer Steel Industries:


This is a part-time position with anticipated work load of 20 hours per week.

In addition to your time spent in the office and/or the field, you may have opportunities to participate in a number of educational and social activities.


General Position Summary & Responsibilities:


The Sustainability Program Intern will support the Corporate Sustainability Program Manager with data collection, analytics, report writing and other sustainability duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitor and collect data
  • Perform data entry tasks
  • Provide routine progress reports to Manager
  • Assist with implementing sustainability programs
  • Provide content for internal communications
  • Assist with Sustainability Management Systems
  • Other duties assigned

Program Duration:

The program lasts for approximately six (6) weeks and is offered at the Warwick, RI Regional Headquarters.  This is a part-time position with anticipated work load of 20 hours per week.  


Preferred Requirements


Currently enrolled college undergraduate or graduate students, or people with substantial professional experience, are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should possess the following:

  • Academic degree (completed or in progress) related to environmental systems/life sciences, engineering, business/accounting, or computer/data sciences.
  • Knowledge or career interests in sustainability, recycling, and the “circular economy”
  • Ability to develop and manage projects independently
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse stakeholders
  • Understanding the importance of meeting unique client and consumer needs
  • Capacity and know-how to navigate the challenges of implementing sustainability initiatives (at “corporate” or “grassroots” –levels.
  • Interest in working in the business world, and infusing sustainability concepts
  • Process oriented, self-motivated, forward thinking, diligent, and creative
  • Ability to research broad topics and provide clear analysis
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities required
  • Advanced Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and Publisher
  • Excellent follow up skills and file organization
  • Demonstrate an appreciation for multi-tasking
