Job Description

The Strategy and Business Development Manager serves as a key player in the analysis, planning, and implementation of critical strategic and business development initiatives. S/He will analyze potential inorganic and organic opportunities, and perform financial valuations and business assessments including the identification of risks and opportunities. Assist with mergers and acquisitions due diligence and integration activities to ensure significant risks and opportunities are identified, quantified and considered as part of the transaction terms and overall acquisition plan. Assist management in the execution of the Company’s growth, cost savings, and productivity improvement strategies by providing financial valuation, project management, and research expertise.

Essential Functions:

 

  • Lead key analysis and evaluation on a variety of strategic projects across the Company’s continuous stream of growth, cost savings, and productivity improvement initiatives.
  • Work with business leaders to develop and critically evaluate the underlying assumptions used to develop valuations and benefits of strategies targeted.
  • Participate on a multi-function team to conduct due diligence, conclude findings and incorporate impact on valuation, purchase terms and integration.
  • Assist in project management with integration of strategic initiatives by organizing and leading reviewing status reports relative to goal for timeliness, cost and synergy.
  • Lead the on-going evaluation and reporting on performance of capital deployed relative to the assumptions or budgets used to justify the purchase.
  • Research and develop growth strategies for the auto parts, metals recycling and steel manufacturing businesses. Such growth strategies may include new or complimentary: products, services and line extensions; markets and distribution channels; technologies and alliances with other leaders in the recycling industry.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position has no direct reports. However, the successful candidate must have superior leadership skills to manage and influence the direction of people with diverse backgrounds.

Interpersonal Contacts: Executive management at Schnitzer and target companies including business and senior functional leaders, middle level functional directors and managers, and outside counsel and investment bankers.

Job Conditions: Primarily an office environment with some activity at manufacturing plants or sites. Some travel in varying amounts.

Required Experience

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in finance, law or related fields. Graduate business or finance degree and professional certifications preferred.
  • 4-6 years of experience in investment banking or related, progressive, rigorous finance positions.
  • Strong business acumen with a keen ability to critically evaluate functional and operational problems and opportunities, including leading the development, communication and execution of plans to address problems and capitalize on opportunities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and project management skills with the ability to interact with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Displays advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills.
  • Strong organization skills; adept at prioritizing and seeing the “big picture.”
  • Prior merger and acquisition experience.
