Job Description

The Senior Tax Accountant plays an integral role in ensuring Schnitzer Steel is complying with its corporate tax filing and reporting requirements. As a key team member, this individual will prepare and document various corporate tax filings, as well as engage in critical tax research and planning activities to minimize risks and overall tax burdens. The ideal candidate will have a desire to continually learn and further develop their technical tax and accounting skillsets, and business acumen.

S/He prepares Federal, state, local and foreign income tax returns for Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. and its joint ventures. Calculates and prepares extension requests and estimated tax vouchers. Assists tax manager with preparation of quarterly and annual tax provisions along with monthly forecasts of tax expense. Assists fixed asset accountant in determining depreciable basis, methods, and lives for income tax accounting. Assists in appeals and audits of income taxes. Minimizes income taxes by staying abreast of Federal, state, local and foreign tax law.

 

Essential Functions

  • Prepare corporate and partnership income tax returns.
  • Calculate and prepare extension requests and estimated tax vouchers.
  • Assist with preparation of quarterly and annual tax provisions along with monthly forecasts of tax expense.
  • Assist fixed asset accountant in determining of depreciable basis, methods, and lives for income tax accounting.
  • Assist in audits and appeals of income taxes.
  • Assist in providing consultants and/or third parties with needed information.
  • Perform routine administrative matters and assist with special projects, including cost segregation studies, as required.
Required Experience

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related field with at least two year’s tax experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a national or regional CPA firm is preferable.
  • Experience with income taxation of corporations and partnerships is preferable.
  • CPA certification is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Commitment to quality of work and team.
  • Knowledge of income taxes.
  • Ability to research, interpret and analyze technical material.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Computer competency in word processing, spreadsheets, and tax software programs. Abstract reasoning and logic skills.
  • 10-key competency.
