Job Description

The Nonferrous (NF) Receiving Supervisor reports to the Plant Manager or General Manager (depending on location) and is responsible for ensuring that all of his/her efforts are compliant with the company’s Health, Safety and Environmental regulations. The incumbent communicates/coordinates regularly with Terminal Operations Manager and the Plant Manager depending of the size and type of facility. The NF Receiving Supervisor is responsible for the efficient operation of the NF retail scale.

The NF Receiving Supervisor will monitor all NF daily scale receiving activity and manage the inventory of purchased NF materials. This position requires that the incumbent be knowledgeable and astute in the grading of NF material so that scale purchases and pricing are in line with the desired metal margins. The incumbent exercises positive control of received inventory to achieve a material balance by purchased commodity or commodity groups and ensures that material transfers from the receiving area to the NF Processing or Finished Goods Areas are performed in accordance with Regional / Facility procedures. The NF Receiving Supervisor has further responsibility for the initial education and training of personnel as to the inspection and grading of customer NF material. The incumbent inspects and grades materials received from retail suppliers, industrial or truck (bulk NF commodities) scale or any remote location or feeder facility if applicable. The incumbent works closely with the Commercial Buying Group to ensure proper customer relations are maintained and that NF Receiving personnel provide a high quality of customer service. The NF Receiving Supervisor will provide appropriate yield analysis information to the Buyers and Commercial Support Personnel to assist in developing necessary pricing and for generating of profit and loss statements for received material.  

Essential Functions:

  • Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
    • Ensures safe work practices and equipment are used at all times and that documentation, inspections, and current practices are in accordance with corporate safety policies, OSHA and other regulatory guidelines. In addition, provides a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
    • Ensures work area(s) are organized and free of potential safety and/or environmental hazards.
    • Ensures that all machine and personal safety equipment is properly installed and used.
    • Conducts accident investigations as necessary.
    • Creates H&S Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) with Regional Safety Engineer(s).
    • Ensures all department employees receive timely safety and operational training and that the appropriate documents (signed acknowledgement forms) are prepared. Maintains employee files per regional practice.
    • Assigns an employee to be on the Safety Committee and personally attends Safety Committee meetings on rotation with other managers.
    • Monitors safety program to reduce accident frequency within department, implements new safety ideas/procedures and establishes safety goals.
  • Operational Performance & Best Management Practices
    • Reviews and approves the daily NF production reporting (including Daily Scale NF Purchases Report as well as any Scale Exception Report) that is generated at the facility.
    • Organizes the physical spaces assigned to the NF Receiving to optimize efficient handling and storing of incoming material.
    • Maintains a layout plan of the flow of material, and identifies areas to use for temporary storage and initial sorting of product.
    • Assigns NF Receiving area personnel specific areas of responsibility to maintain the organization, cleanliness and safety of the department.
    • Coordinates with the Inside Buyer and the Commercial Support Group in matters relating to the customer scale pricing and price quoting of NF material to individuals, industrial accounts and dealers who routinely deal with the retail scale operations.
    • Refers all other pricing issues for customers to the appropriate Buyer in coordination with the NF Receiving Supervisor.
    • Works with the General Manager to identify those areas where training is needed and coordinates the cross training of individuals in NF processing.
    • Develops, enhances, and maintains positive business relationships with customers, vendors and staff.
  • Equipment & Maintenance
    • Inspects allocated department equipment to ensure all assets are working within stated guidelines, and submits work orders to maintenance staff as needed or required.
    • Submits purchase orders as needed or required in order to maintain or enhance department operations.
    • Calibrates radiation detection equipment and scale systems for optimal accuracy.
  • Inventory & Quality Control
    • Trains scale personnel in the use of the facility’s computer scale system, the grading of the most commonly received customer material (e.g. copper, brass, aluminum, wire cable etc.), variations as to clean vs. contaminated / dirty material; when to request the electronic testing of nickel-based hi-temp material, and the consequences of not understanding and accurately determining the yield of certain items.
    • Ensures accurate testing, grading and classification of material purchased over the NF Retail Scale, is in accordance with documented best practices, and grading of material is consistent with industry standards and/or customer specifications.
    • Ensures assigned personnel are properly licensed to operate any processing or handling equipment assigned to the department.
    • Coordinates closely with the NF Processing Supervisor, as it relates to the movement of product to the NF Processing and / or the NF finished goods storage area. Coordinates and notifies the NF Processing Supervisor of intended moves at the end of the month in coordination with other physical inventory activities.
    • Ensures that reports of any off grade/ off spec materials are discussed with the supervisor prior to shipment in order to: eliminate quality consumer complaints; avoid downgrades; and eliminate claims.
    • Ensures that sorting and upgrading of received material is properly tracked and that appropriate transfers between commodities are made in order to maintain proper inventory
  • Budgeting & Forecasting
    • Conducts weekly inventory material balance of selected commodities for items that have been transferred to either the NF Processing or Finished Goods Areas.
    • Reviews beginning inventory numbers plus receipts less the transfer quantity to indicate the actual remaining physical quantity on hand.
    • Conducts monthly physical inventory and runs a material balance for all commodities purchased and inventoried during the month. May involve assistance from the Accounting Department or Financial Business Partners to reconcile cycle counting if large variances exist.
  • Administrative Management
    • Monitors supervisory practices to ensure compliance with HR policies and union contracts.
    • Monitors and maintains hourly staff at cost effective and competitive levels.
    • Trains, develops, coaches, mentors, reviews, and holds subordinate staff accountable for operational assignments.
    • Works with Human Resources personnel to prepare job descriptions, interview prospective production employees and review performance of employees.
Required Skills

Internal Control Responsibilities:

Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures and controls to better relate to the business.  Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.

Supervisory Responsibility:

The NF Receiving Supervisor directly supervises to a group of employees within the NF Receiving Department.

 

Interpersonal Contacts:

Internal contacts include ferrous buyers for advising, asking questions, coordinating customer and sales activity, pricing, and assisting to maintain company goals; office staff for exchanging information on paperwork and computer entry; yard personnel for the exchange of information regarding truck movement and incoming material. The NF Receiving Supervisor will speak directly to and or respond to other management personnel i.e. Regional Director, Regional General Manager, Director of Commercial Operations, Commercial Operations Managers and Safety and Environmental Managers.

 

Job Conditions:

Exposure to physical operations at metal recycling yards; it is necessary to walk/climb in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces and to out-of-the-way areas. Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions and some minimum travel is required. Work pressure can be substantial during peak times, requiring considerable adaptability; disturbances of work flow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Offsite work involves meeting in person with select customers, and visiting other Schnitzer locations.

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

Ability to: lift and carry up to 70 pounds occasionally;   Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments within the Schnitzer Group. Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing and analyzing data figures and computer use.

Required Experience

Qualifications:

A high school diploma or equivalent; high school or better level mathematical skills: minimum 3 years metal recycling industry experience. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.

Thorough knowledge of NF materials grading; good judgment, interpersonal communications; self starter; good organizational skills; ability to negotiate; past supervisory experience a plus.
