Job Description

The Management Trainee (MT) is assigned to rotational on the job training in all functional production operations. The position will focus on in bound materials at the scale, logistics/dispatch, inspection, shredder, joint products, stock piling, maintenance, ship loading, purchasing/procurement, administrative departments, and completes special projects as needed.  By completion of the program the MT should have the skills and abilities to allow the incumbent to step into vacation relief, leaves of absence, temporary assignments in lead or supervisor positions, or special projects based on skill sets demonstrated during training. The trainee may also be considered to fill vacant positions throughout the Metals division.  This position will require analytical, organizational and negotiation skills to ensure problems are solved efficiently and timely in the most effective manner possible. 

This position operates with in established parameters under close supervision.    The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the position.  Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increases profits.

Essential Functions:

Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)

During the program’s course the MT is responsible for learning and applying the following:

  • Environmental Health & Safety regulations, best practices and operational issues of each functional area.
  • The hazards associated with working in the scrap industry and preventative practices.
  • Incident or accident investigation procedures.
  • Chain of command for reporting
  • Perform and/or train on Corrective Action Plans in accordance with policy.
  • Assist with the coordination of Site Safety to ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory establishments.
  • Will observe and learn the required reduction of accident/incident initiatives and annual goals of the metals recycling facility. 
  • Supports overall H&S issues within facility by job shadowing with the Regional Environmental Engineer and Health & Safety Engineer(s) to observer, learn, and apply all regulatory requirements and compliance in accordance with company, federal and state policies.
  • Participates in safety training within each functional operation.
  • Responsible for wearing appropriate personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Providing a safe environment for all employees, customers and visitors.

Operational Performance & Best Business Practices

  • Observes and performs essential functions of production positions in each functional operation under the supervision and direction of functional department manager(s).
  • Observes the supervision of personnel on the day to day through put and production activities associated with scrap processing:  shredder operations, stock piling, ship loading, equipment delegation and repairs; scheduling, coordination and delegation of personnel,  and management of major projects.

Commercial

  • During the programs course the MT will gain knowledge on purchasing strategy of the commercial operations group  implemented monthly, including:
  • Purchase price per commodity.
  • Intake, tons per month by commodity.
  • Commodities efficiency per unit of equipment.
  • Expense and control of overall cost.
  • Shipments actual booked to tons shipped

Equipment Maintenance

  • Observes, learns, and assists with the preventative maintenance program under the supervision and direction of the Maintenance Manager and mechanics. 
  • Will become knowledgeable on scheduling maintenance on equipment, researching new methods of repair, and following through on repair projects to implementation. 
  • Will learn how to and assist in soliciting quotes and select vendors.
  • Will learn how to establish repair procedures and work closely with functional managers and vendors to assure quality repairs are completed in a cost effective and timely manner.
  • Exposure to the Oracle data entry and report requirements of the maintenance department

Inventory & Quality Control

  • Observes, learns, and completes daily reports required by each operation department.
  • Learns scrap inspection and identification of both ferrous and nonferrous metals
  • Learns through put and cost controls for each operation function
  • Learns to prepare time and material estimates for various department staff as needed.
  • Learns to maintain accurate: production records;  records with regard to project costs/negotiations with contractors to eliminate  cost overruns
  • Learns how to complete monthly inventory and inventory reporting requirements

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Observes and learns budgets and forecasting under the direction of Operations Mangers
  • Learns the AFE process
  • Learns the dynamics of scrap processing requirements and profit enhancement of
  • Torching variables and costs
  • Shearing variables and costs
  • Shredding variables and costs
  • Bailing variables and costs
  • Ship loading variables and costs
  • Learns transportation variables and costs
  • Learns the corporate buying directives
Required Skills

 Job Conditions:

 Significant time is spent outdoors learning operations functions and  equipment projects.  Subject to noise, dust, weather and heavy machinery.  Exposure to physical operations at metal recycling yards; it is necessary to walk/climb in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces and to out-of-the-way areas.  Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions and some minimum travel is required. Work pressure can be substantial during peak times, requiring considerable adaptability; disturbances of work flow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis.  Offsite work visiting other Schnitzer locations. 

 Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

Able to: lift and carry 25 pounds, and up to 50 pounds occasionally; walk or stand for long periods of time; negotiate over uneven surfaces;  ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously.  Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments within the Schnitzer Group.  Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing and analyzing data figures and computer use.

Required Experience

Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience, preferably 1 year or more scrap manufacturing or 3-5 years experience in a related heavy industrial environment.  This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to drive an automobile.

 Knowledge of, or experience with fabrication; tools, maintenance equipment/parts, and repair preferred.  Computer and competency using Microsoft Office; attention to detail and accuracy; excellent math, organizational, and management skills; tact and ability to communicate on a professional level to employees of all levels from staff to senior management, both orally and in writing.  Ability to obtain and evaluate data about manufacturing processes, procedures, and  equipment and how to use that information; work under heavy pressure and deadlines; apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions in controlled situations; interpret an extensive variety of technical materials in books, manuals, texts, etc. Ability to analyze and interpret financial data for the facility and suggest changes that enhance performance of the facility.
