The Letter of Credit Specialist (L/C Specialist) reports to the Export Contract Manager. The L/C Specialist is responsible for obtaining the necessary information to process and complete Bulk Export Letters of Credit and related financial transactions for customers and maintains export files. The L/C Specialist checks all information thoroughly to ensure that there are no errors and what is being presented is evaluated and validated correctly in the interests of the bank and its policies. They will review contracts and Letters of Credit and notify yards and surveyors of L/C requirements. Other responsibilities include the accurate completion of journal entries, maintaining general ledger and prepared various account analysis. The L/C Specialist prepares a variety of monthly and annual bulk export and receipt reports for management. In addition, reviews and calculates commission invoices and arranges payment.

Internal Control Responsibilities:

Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures and controls to better relate to the business. Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.     

Job Conditions:

External contacts include; customers, carriers, customs and quality inspectors, local and federal governmental regulation agencies, various business contacts, etc.

Internal contacts include AMR senior and Executive Management. Contact will also include sales, operations, credit and other personnel throughout SSI. Contact may be phone, email and face-to-face contact with others.

Interpersonal Contacts:

Average office environment; work pressure can be substantial during peak times, requiring considerable adaptability, disturbances of work flow, and/ or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Some travel to consumer operations, and other SSI locations and supplier’s operations required. Position may see odd hours of work due to the nature of the position and business.

Required Skills

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

Ability to: lift and carry up to 10 pounds occasionally; sit for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; write by hand and keyboard for extended periods of time, up to 6-8 hours per day; assemble papers, paper punch, staple, file; apply sufficient force to open and close file drawers. Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments within the Schnitzer Steel organization. Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing and analyzing data figures, accounting, and computer use.

Required Experience


  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Five or more years’ experience in International Trade and Letters of Credit would be a plus.
  • Proven experience with bank rate negotiations highly desired.
  • Experience with international shipping/transportation of commodities highly desired.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, good time management skills and professional presentation are required.
  • Ability to work independently and be detail oriented especially when it comes to effectively documenting transactions.
  • Advanced analytical skills.
  • Ability to disseminate information timely and accurately and to work under pressure.
  • Must have an above average understanding of various computer applications including, but not limited to: Excel spreadsheets, word processing, internet, on-line banking systems (a plus), and a limited knowledge of databases.
  • Ability to learn new systems quickly and adapt to the environment are a plus.
