Job Description

Work with Schnitzer Auto and Metals Recycling (AMR) auto dismantling locations within assigned region and locations to drive a safe and environmentally responsible culture through training and coaching, program administration, and being the primary safety & environmental resource. Focus of efforts is creating and maintaining an injury free and regulatory compliant workplace.

As the primary environmental, health and safety (EHS) resource for the assigned region, leading change through others by developing and supporting relationships with Regional Vice Presidents and their organizations. Delivering safety & environmental training, compliance, and guidance to each location is critical.

This position requires fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English and Spanish.  The person selected will be required to travel to our facilities in Puerto Rico at least one week per month.

Essential Functions:

  1. Ensure the implementation of and conformance with Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. (SSI) written EHS programs and policies across the region. Review and modify programs annually to insure regulatory compliance and relevance.
  2. Develop Location Manager as the site EHS coordinator through training, coaching, and participation in location EHS events
  3. Support and lead as required incident investigations, root cause analysis and corrective action development for workplace injuries. Support site safety committees and environmental teams through participation and driving closure of identified non-conforming and unsafe/ environmental conditions/practices.
  4. Develop (as required) and deliver annual EHS compliance training, manager EHS responsibilities training, and program certification training (where required)
  5. Perform ongoing program specific auditing to drive EHS, ADA and DOT compliance sustainability. Audit overall operations EHS audits to verify validity of site self audits. Drive corrective action execution through oversight and as a resource.
  6. Maintain SSI corporate injury and illness data weekly for assigned regional locations and assist SSI Safety Director in organizing and delivering I&I data reporting as required. Perform and analyze safety and environmental performance of region for trends and issues to be used in continuous EHS improvement
  7. Oversee and manage projects in region relating to safety and environmental improvements. Work with maintenance and operations to improve safety and environmental effects of vehicle dismantling processes.
  8. Provide direction to location in the event of regulatory inspection or visit and report
  9. Continuously maintain currency with safety and environmental regulations and requirements through education, relationships with local regulators, and reading relevant journals, websites, and Federal, state and local regulatory documents.

This position requires possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to drive an automobile.

Required Experience

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree and 5+years experience in EHS, industrial safety, environmental management or risk management. Safety/environmental certifications are preferred. Willingness to travel up to 50% of work time within region. Must have safety trainer training or be able to obtain trainer certification within 6 months of hire date.

Knowledge of general safety and environmental requirements in a multi-location production and operations setting is desirable. Good written and oral communications, persuasion and negotiation skills. Computer competency in Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint. Interpersonal skills including diplomacy and patience, and the ability to teach/explain abstract as well as concrete ideas to others.
