Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures safe operations are incorporated into maintenance strategies and enforces plant safety programs.
  • Directs both routine and complex PLC programming and programs Human Machine Interface computers to interact with the process.
  • Oversees diagnoses and repair of plant control and automation systems including electronic motor drives and electronic test equipment.
  • Supervises and directs the work of automation and instrumentationtechnicians.
  • Communicates with General Foreman to ensure automation and instrumentation status and goals align with strategic planning.
  • Maintains current and accurate prints and drawings of electrical equipment and systems for CSRM.
  • Collaborates with other department staff, management and/or vendors to resolve problems, to communicate department needs, to facilitate system improvements and to coordinate the purchase or service of equipment.
  • Develops preventative and predictive maintenance strategies while constantly improving existing strategies.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience of Industrial Automation and Instrumentation Controls.
  • Specific education/experience in steelmaking.
  • Valid State of Oregon Journeyman Electrician License preferred.

Performance Standards:

  • Thorough knowledge and skill in the use of equipment, technologies, terminology, and practices related to industrial technology.
  • Thorough knowledge of CSRM’s electrical systems and the State of Oregon’s electrical safety rules and regulations as they apply to job duties.
  • Ability to operate the tools, equipment, hardware and software necessary to perform the duties of this position. This includes working knowledge of and ability to effectively use hand tools, power tools, volt/ohm meter, oscilloscope, PLC and HMI programming software, AC and DC drives software, and panel view software.
  • Must be able to apply industrial engineering principles and techniques to develop problem resolution and effectively instruct other employees on a course of action.
  • Must possess strong communication skills, both oral and written, the ability to convey technical information to non-technical staff, and to effectively address questions related to projects and engineering documentation.
  • Must possess strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Climbing: Occasionally, ascending or descending stairs on an infrequent basis.
  • Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching: Occasionally, when needing to access office supplies or equipment or to take dimensional measurements of plant structures or equipment.
  • Standing/Walking: Frequently, on a daily basis, to various locations within the manufacturing plant.
  • Reaching: Frequently, to retrieve supplies, equipment or files/paperwork or to measure.
  • Pushing/Pulling/Lifting: Occasionally, to move items within the office environment.
  • Repetitive motions of the hands/wrists/fingers: Continually, to perform dutiessuch as using a keyboard, telephone, record filing or operating a copier/fax.
  • Sitting: Continually, while performing duties at workstation.

Uses of Senses:

  • Talking in person/by phone: Continually, to explain procedures, gather information, and brief leadership. Must be able to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, and/or via email.
  • Hearing: Continually, must be able to hear the radio and phone.
  • Vision - Near/Far Vision: Continually, to read and view computer monitor, data, figures and text and dimensional measurements.


  • Works indoors 90% of the time, outdoors 10% of the time. Exposed to all types of weather conditions when traversing the plant.
  • Safety requirements: Follow established PPE policy.
  • Exposures: Rarely, exposed to fumes from outside area. Continually, when outside, exposed to all types of weather conditions, dust, dirt and noise.

Required Experience
